This is a very special recipe. It features durian, the 'stinky' fruit that has a host of nutritional benefits & also bliss chemicals. You will learn how to make an incredible, delicious drink 'Durian Schisandra Superherb Shake' made by my friend & food alchemist Nathaniel Finkelstein. I've known Nathaniel for many years, and from the first days we were friends durian was part of the game. We both spent time on the Big Island and Kauai living off the magical, tropical lands full of abundant beauty, meeting first at a permaculture retreat working in the kitchen. Durian was one of those elusive fruits, when you find one, for those that love it, that is an experience of bliss & excitement. So it's no surprise that Nathaniel wanted to share a Durian Shake with me on my recent visit to the Bay Area.
Also known as the Chocolate Yogi, Nathaniel has always made the most unique and magical chocolates to share. Some are infused with essential oils, rare and so different than any other I've ever had. If you want to get your hands on some contact him directly as they are very special bars available on special order only at the moment. Email email@example.com
What does 'Dessert Medicine' mean to you?
>> "Dessert Medicine" to me means allowing the sweetness of life to enrich and enliven all aspects of our life together. Dessert is one of our most celebrated moments throughout any given day for any young child or elder, allowing this gift and treat for ourselves to be fully activated and with the medicinal passageways for new connections to made and old patterns to be broken. No longer does over indulgence into a vice bring us to our pitfall, this new healthy habit if turned into "Dessert Medicine" shall be the fuel for the creative fire to enliven and activate your daily life.
What inspires you most?
>> Nature Inspires me most. The pure, raw beauty of nature, the moss, the leaves rustling in the wind, the birds chirping above, the reflection of the sun on the water mid day. The gentle subtle messages from nature when I am open and available to receive them are the most inspiring aspects of life to me. This brings me great joy, as I aim to be a conduit for this infinite love to pulsate through my body, mind, and spirit, and to carry forth the pure un-adultered messages, and love from nature to humanity and beyond.
How did you get your start in chocolate making, what drives this passion?
>> I got my start in chocolate making as a young boy and taylor made a brownie recipe that was off the hook I shared with my teachers in elementary school. The Love affair with chocolate as was enraptured with dipping strawberries in the melted chocolate for dessert in my early days (simple and best ever Dessert as Medicine). I then when studying yoga and raw foods in my late teens discovered the power of Raw Cacao, and immediately knew I was to develop a special relationship with this medicine and began truffle making. This evolved to me gaining the courage to hop across the globe to Hawaii and live on David Wolfes' Cacao farm, Noniland, where I furthered my connection from planting in the soils by day and making chocolate by night. I eventually inherited some chocolate molds and then began "bar smithing" and ever since have been constantly evolving and refining this craft.
What is 'Cacao Yogi,' tell us about the concept and how you came up with it?
>> Cacao Yogi = Cacao Unified Field. Cacao is a universal medicine to bridge cultures, people, places, things, hearts, and more. I founded Cacao Yogi as an evolution in response to an early nickname I developed called "The Chocolate Yogi" as I began studying yoga and making chocolate and naturally things evolved into founding Cacao Yogi as Life Style Brand. Cacao Yogi is here to provide nourishment to the world through many delicious forms of chocolate collections and inspirational art and poetry. Cacao Yogi is a collaborative space for chocolate lovers to come together and enjoy learning and participating in chocolate ceremonies, herbal elixir creations, and new healthy ways to provide that extra social lubrication for events and celebratory moments without adding any toxins to equation. Cacao Yogi is a platform for people to have a deeper connection to Earth and the medicine systems of this planet's vast pharmacopeia of herbs, minerals, crystals, and beyond enriching their connection to themselves and their highest potential.
Lets hear a durian story, maybe one from Hawaii, the journey to obtain it and to consume it? :)
>> Durian Story, So this one time we responded to a craigslist add about someone needing help with this crazy fruit that this tree on a property had been pumping so much of out and the owner had no idea what to do with all these durian fruits. So a friend and I cruise over with our truck and proceed to do a great service to this man troubled by what to do with so many of these crazy spiky Durian fruits, and of course did not like them at all. We loaded up the back of the truck with these super prime "fresh" durian which at the time was a very new and different experience then the frozen kind. Well the rest is history, we scored big time, did a great service to the community by helping haul out all these durian fruits and take them home to chow down for a week strait of unlimited Durian flesh melting in our mouths. Those fresh Durian are so good!! Ready for a durian tour to Asia soon enough...
What do you want to share most with others?
>> It is my desire to share simple living truths and ancient wisdom with others in the most desirable forms, like chocolate. I desire to share new perspectives, opportunities to see a new way of being on this planet that are more wholesome and complete. It is certainly one of my desires to share the deliciousness of life with people, introduce some new flavors of yum to the mix so to spice up this beautiful blessed life and invite others into living in Natural Magic. I desire to help all being in all worlds know and taste what chocolate is really here to show us!
